Understanding Selection Options

DesignSpace offers many ways to select specific geometry for applying boundary conditions and/or scoping results on critical stress, strain, or deflection results.

The Selection Toolbar allows you to filter on the type of geometry you wish to select. For example, you can filter on vertices, edges, faces, or volumes. You can also choose how you would like to select the geometry. There are two selection modes available:

Flood Select allows you to select multiple geometric objects simply by pressing and holding down the left mouse button and then moving the mouse over them. Any object that the mouse touches is added to the selection.

Box Select allows you to select geometric objects from the graphics window by clicking with the left mouse button and then dragging it across other objects. The box select follows the standard selection feature. If the box is created right to left, any geometry the box touches is included in the selection.

Quick Tip

The Selection Planes that appear in the bottom left corner of your screen once you have initialized a selection are used to filter your selection on geometry that is behind or hidden by other geometry. This is similar to the right click and "Select Next" option found in most CAD packages.

Extend Selection allows you to create a selection which includes adjacent or all faces that are tangent to the original face selected.

Quick Tip

The Named Selection Toolbar contains options to group and control like-grouped items. It is available for use on all types of selections: vertices, edges, faces, and volumes. Name Selections can be used in cases when a specific group of selected geometry is used repeatedly or is referenced by a specific boundary condition or command snippet. Named Selections can also be used to control visibility and suppression by using the options available in the toolbar's pull-down menu.
